Dear Annie,

NEW YEAR'S NEWSLETTER

We have survived another festive season, and by what many are saying, it's the busiest and best one the area has had in some years. Once again I was heartened (and relieved) to see that books were a very popular choice for Christmas gifts and for holiday entertainment.

Chair THE AUTHOR'S SEAT

We are starting the year with a bang. I am very aware of the great efforts needed to get a book of any kind to the publication stage. There is much cost, time and heartache in the writing, editing, design, printing, binding and more. But then it gets really hard! How can you get the word out to bookshops which are serviced by the big publishers who have big name authors and a similarly big marketing budget? In my own small way, I would like to help some of our wonderful local authors by giving them a platform to show their wares.

Every Saturday morning, from 10.00am to 12.00 midday, you will find an author or maybe two, seated outside my shop with their own book. They will be very happy to speak to you about their book, their inspirations and their journey through the wildlands of the publishing world. The genres will be varied; they may be a novelist, a children's book illustrator, a therapist or a dog trainer, but their printed work will be a result of very hard work and loads of passion, and they will all be the same in that sense. Of course, their books will be available for purchase.

You'll find the "Author's Seat" schedule at the end of this newsletter and on my website. Record the dates!

Happy reading,

from Annie & Lyn

EVENTS

GIULIA LESSANUTTI - The Virgin's Girdle

Virgin's GirdleOur first evening event of the year is a beauty! I know that there will be a lot of interest for this one, as so many of us dream of Italy.

Images of the Sacra Cintola, an important relic of the Virgin Mary, appear all over Italy. Art historian Giulia Lessanutti set out on a personal odyssey to discover how it is interwoven with depictions of Mary's Assumption and how its meaning and significance can be understood in relation to this. Readers can accompany her on a journey through art as she rediscovers paintings, frescoes and sculptural reliefs to explore the iconography of the relic. Full-colour reproductions that she uncovered of many of the gorgeous works by artists from Michelangelo to anonymous apprentices illuminate her work.

She also tells the Girdle's stories: how girdles were viewed in earlier spiritual traditions; their significance as a symbol of both fertility and chastity; how the Girdle became the centre of a cult in Tuscany and Umbria that grew in importance as the trade of the region flourished; the rituals and miracles surrounding it; how the town of Prato which owns the relic used it to proclaim its autonomy and call on its protection.

Lessanutti's journey is also the story of a devout Catholic girl developing into a woman as the Church itself has changed. She uses depictions of the Virgin to discuss the evolving role of women as viewed by Rome and among the faithful.

Giulia is an interesting, well travelled and good humoured person. I'm sure that we will have some laughs along the way! Come and join us.

SOME RECENT FAVOURITE BOOKS

Life of Pi

I am embarrassed to say that it was only very recently that I read THE LIFE OF PI. It is one of the most wonderful reading experiences I have had in some time. I encourage you to read it now - whether or not you have seen the incredible Ang Lee film.

HARD TWISTED by C. Joseph Greaves. A raw, brutal yet beautiful novel in the style of Cormac McCarthy. The story is a Bonnie & Clyde type tale based on true events,

TOE TAG QUINTET by Matthew Condon. A retired Sydney detective moves to the Gold Coast to spend his autumn years, only to find that many of the nasty crims he has nabbed over the years have had the same idea. Retirement can be murder!

Many people go off on a physical holiday over the Christmas period - I go off on a literary one. I confess to voraciously consuming two more books in the SONG OF ICE & FIRE series by George R.R. Martin over these weeks.   HBO has filmed the first two books as 10 part TV series (the third one will be out early this year), and this has given the books a new lease of life. These books pulsate with violence, treachery, sex and revenge, and for a fantasy series, it's all too human. It's my dirty little secret! Read it before you see it (if you dare!).
