Dear Annie,

We're already well and truly into 2010.  So much has happened already, and March will bring a number of exciting literary events. They are all very close together, so take your vitamins,  pack a bag and come to all of them!  They're all quite different.

On a personal note, I'm thrilled to be heading off to the Dark Continent with best buddy and bookseller, Rachel, and the fantastic Dani, in August.  We're off on safari!  This is a lifetime dream for me, so expect to see plenty of books about all things Africa in the bookshop up until then!

LynLyn was a very lucky lady last week when John Danalis popped in to visit.  He's the author of a fabulous young adult memoir called "Riding the Black Cockatoo", about an Australian-born Greek man who discovers the world of the indigenous Australians.  John wrapped Lyn in his possum-skin cloak!  He's a delightful, gentle man, who has written a book we should all read.

We recently had a fantastic evening at Mooloolaba Surf Club with Lenny Bartulin.  It was hosted by Sunshine Coast Libraries and the Courier Mail Big Book Club.  Lenny was very entertaining, and very handsome, and I must say that I like his brand of lightweight, but well-written crime ("A Deadly Business" & "The Black Russian").

Here's Lenny with the lovely Jacqueline Walch from SCL and Alison Crisp from Courier Mail Big Book Club.

DONNA MULHEARN - "ORDINARY COURAGE: My Journey to Baghdad as a Human Shield"

Ordinary Courage I'm very excited to announce a very different and fascinating author event, which I've decided to hold on my home turf of Peregian Beach, at the unique "Qom" in the Village Square.

Donna Mulhearn's world as she knew it had fallen apart.  By the age of 34, her marriage was over; she was disillusioned by her career as a journalist and political adviser and she despaired at the person she was becoming.

Then one day she heard something radical, a call to action that would change her life forever. A man on the radio was appealing for human shields in Iraq - volunteers to deter the 'Coalition of the Willing' from attacking Baghdad. Donna was already against the war - she was a firm believer in the power of non-violent action, and like many people she mistrusted Bush and Co's motives for entering Iraq. She knew immediately what she had to do.

Despite protests from concerned family and friends, Donna soon found herself in Baghdad, which she was surprised to find was a thriving, cosmopolitan city, with a highly educated and confident population, who were waiting with dread for the missiles to strike. There she joined hundreds of shields from a range of countries who formed small teams to protect major sites - power stations, water treatment plants, communication centres - that were crucial to the life of innocent people. With Bush's deadline for attack looming, businesses closed their doors for perhaps the last time and the streets became eerily silent as people prepared for the worst.

Donna and her team took up position at a food silo, where they endured night after night of harrowing missile attacks, while during the day, in a show of support and solidarity, they visited hospitals and areas that had been bombed. Donna became the key media contact, and at the same time as supplying vital information to the outside world, she found she had to defend herself against accusations of being a traitor. Even when Saddam's statue toppled and the Coalition claimed victory, her challenges did not end.

Join Donna and hear her story.......

LA DOLCE VITA - AN ITALIAN EXPERIENCE

Italy "Evergreen" is hosting a weekend in Italy over the 27th and 28th March.  Come along to experience all things Italian - food, wine, beauty products, travel etc. etc.  I am thrilled to be hosting a BRUNCH with TRISH CLARK, author of "GOOD NIGHT & GOD BLESS" (Volume 1), which is a guide to convent and monastery accommodation in Italy, as well as in Austria and the Czech Republic.

Trish was educated by the Ursuline nuns in Toowoomba, and was an avid reader, an interest which led to travel and an interest in other cultures.  Trish owned a travel marketing business, but decided to forgo her formal work to compile a lengthy database of information on religious guesthouses.  She amassed enough material for three volumes!
