Dear Annie,

Book Club

We love our books, and talking about them, so much that we've decided to open up our book club to interested bibliophiles.  My wonderful neighbour Ryan, from Shanghai Sally's Tea & Furniture Emporium, is opening up specially for us on the third Tuesday of each month, from 7.30 - 9.30, so we can have somewhere enjoyable and convenient to hold our discussion.  Tea, coffee and snacks will be available for sale.  A book will be nominated at each meeting, for the following month, and that book may be bought, borrowed or stolen during that month, with a view to broad and interesting observations from a mixed group of readers.

The book for March is "GUNSHOT ROAD" by Adrian Hyland.  It's a gritty Australian crime novel, in the outback, and featuring Emily Tempest, Aboriginal Community Police Officer.

MEETING:  Tuesday 15th March - 7.30pm

Shanghai Sally's, next to Annie's Books

The book for April will be "RIDING THE BLACK COCKATOO" by John Danalis.  Many of you may have read this, as it is one of my favourites.  It is a memoir written for young adult reader, but I feel it's a "must read" for everyone.  I am hoping that the author may join us for our discussion on Tuesday 19th April.  Watch this space!

Many of my customers have been concerned about the news regarding the closure of some Australian bookshops, and how it may affect me.  I appreciate their thoughts, but I honestly feel that there has been, and will continue to be, a move toward shopping in smaller, intimate shops like mine.  Of course the internet will attract large numbers of book buyers, but not everyone is price-driven, or convenience-driven; enough of us still enjoy the art of browsing, an activity encouraged at Annie's Books.  To spend time picking up different books, reading the back covers and the odd pages, is an enjoyable activity, and good advice from bookseller who are avid, experienced readers will always be irreplaceable.
Don't forget that the 6th (and final) part of the "Earth's Children" series by Jean Auel will arrive at the end of the month.  It is titled "Land of the Painted Caves".  Reserve your copy now!

Happy reading,

from Annie & Lyn

There's a lot happening over the next month or so, so get out your diaries and mark these dates......

Friends like these

Wendy is coming back to Noosa!  She is celebrating the release of "FRIENDS LIKE THESE" which I know is going to be just as funny, sexy and crazy as her other novels.  Wendy Harmer is one of Australia's best-known humorists, as well as the author of many very successful books, including the "Pearlie" children's series.  Laugh your way through a fabulous lunch at Embassy XO, but book soon, as numbers are very limited.

ANGE TAKATS: "Soundbites from a Songbird in Siam"
The Buffalo Funeral

"From buffalo funerals to Tiger Balm boob jobs, this memoir reveals the bizarre side of Thai life (and much more...")

Many of you will know the beautiful Ange, and will have enjoyed her wonderful, intimate album, "Aniseed Tea".  Ange is well on her way to song writing, recording and performing success, but she is a woman with a past!  At the tender age of 22, Ange left her comfy life in Sydney to work in the cut-throat, male dominated, international media in South-East Asia.

"There's a strong link between Thailand and my career as a musician because it was in Bangkok that I was offered my first gig.  Many of the songs on Aniseed Tea were inspired by that time, and I suppose this book is my way of sharing the stories behind the songs," says Ange.  Come on down and hear some of Ange's stories, and I'm thrilled to say that she will be entertaining us with her songs as well!

ANGE TAKATS - " Buffalo Funeral"

THURSDAY 7th APRIL - 6.00pm

(Although this is a free event, we'd appreciate a call or email if you are intending to come.)

TRAILBLAZERS: Caroline Chisholm to Quentin Bryce by Susanna de Vries

Susanna is a dear friend of mine and many in my community.  She is considered the expert when it comes to women throughout Australian history in particular, and has a unique method of drawing the reader into the world of the past.  Susanna has a large number of publications under her belt, and I believe that this new book may be her last (we'll see!).

Susanna is a lively speaker and an absolutely wonderful writer, so I advise you to join us for a presentation and a conversation about women who have blazed their trail through Australian history.  II suspect we could see Susanna herself in a publication some day!).

Newsletter question....

Last newsletter's question was FAR too easy!  This month's winner will receive a copy of "Bird Cloud" by Annie Proulx.

Just remember that I will only contact the winner, that is, the first email I receive with the correct answer.........

Q: What is the name of Annie Proulx's Wyoming property?
