Annie's Books on Peregian
Dear Annie,

Emu LaunchApril was a HUGE month!  We had lunch with Kristin Williamson, along with David and Rory, at "Coconut Grove", Leonie Palmer and Stef Fisher's wonderful Sunshine Beach restaurant.  We lunched again with the hilarious Wendy Harmer whilst watching the boats go by, with the good folks at "Trio's On The River".  It was an amazing sight to see around 100 people on the footpath outside the shop, celebrating the release of "Up Rose An Emu", the history of the Noosa to Coolum stretch of coastline, by Peter Sharpe.  Even the mayor came!

We love seeing children discover the love of books, and so we've decided to do STORYTELLING IN THE VILLAGE SQUARE each Wednesday afternoon from 3.30 - 4.30.  The reader will be GEMMA TOWNSEND, who has recently completed an Early Childhood Diploma, is running a drama group with Coolum Civic Centre, and is doing voluntary work at the local kindies.  We think she's perfect for the job!  Gemma will share some of her favourite stories with the children whilst Mum and Dad can enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee.  This is free of charge event which we know will be very popular.

Since the shopfront has recently proved to such a popular venue, we have decided to hold a couple of special evenings in May.....

Happy reading,
from Annie & Lyn

DEREK BERG:  "SHIPPING BROKER"
Shipping Broker
"Shipping Broker: From Norway to the Turmoil of Pre-War China" is the story of Derek Berg's father, Sverre.  Sverre left his native Norway in 1913 to get experience in shipping offices in Glasgow and Nantes.  Whilst he was in Glasgow, war broke out.  He describes the devastating effect, first of the German surface raiders, and later the U-boats on ship owners and on the course of the war.

The book follows Sverre's travels through France to Hong Kong, where he spent 24 years and witnessed the rise of Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek and their endeavours to unify China.  On Christmas Day, 1941, Sverre Berg, Royal Hong Kong volunteer, became a prisoner of war.

Derek Berg has written a wonderful account of his father's life.  Join Derek for a glass of wine and an informal chat.

MICHELLE BRENNAN - "MYSTERIOUS ORBS: SIGNS OF THE TIMES"
Mysterious Orbs
Michelle Brennan's life reads like an adventure novel.  She is a medium and sees orbs with the naked eye, feels their presence and communicates with them.  Michelle's book "Mysterious Orbs" is full of photographs of these phenomenon.  She has travelled far and wide, exploring fascinating places around the world, in order to communicate with these spiritual beings.  Michelle not only has the ability to see spirits, she has been able to capture images of the orbs, quite a photographic achievement!

Michelle has another hat that she wears;  she has a boutique winery named Beaumont Estate, and we'll be trying some of her delicious wines!  Meet Michelle at the shop for a drink and a chat.   This will be a most intriguing evening.

BOOKS
Review by Annie Grossman
JASPER JONES by Craig Silvey
Jasper Jones
I adored this book!  Jasper Jones is a beautiful piece of Australian fiction.  I don't really want to tell too much about this book, except that is has the most entertaining dialogue I have read in some time.  The main characters are adolescent boys who live in a small, Australian country town, and the story is about friendships, secrets and lies.

BREATH by Tim Winton
Breath
Tim Winton's latest novel is now in paperback.  Dare I say that I think it's his best yet?  "Breath" was awarded the Indie Award in 2008, and has been shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award for 2009 (announcement June 18th) and the NSW Premier's Literary Award, and has already received more awards and accolades than any recent work of Australian literature.

We waited seven years for a new novel from Tim, and I believe it was worth the wait for this lyrical and poignant coming-of-age masterpiece.

NOCTURNES: FIVE STORIES OF MUSIC & NIGHTFALL  by Kazuo Ishiguro
Nocturnes
Ishiguro's sixth  book is a cycle of five stories, exploring love, music and the passing of time.

"His books are Zen gardens with no flowery metaphors, no wild, untamed weeds threatening - or allowed - to overrun the plot."

- (The Globe & Mail)

THE CHILDREN'S BOOK by A.S. Byatt
The Childrens Book
A gripping, panoramic literary novel of family secrets, set against a backdrop of a bohemian, artistic, late Victorian and Edwardian world, about the damage wrought by writers of children's books on their children - about predators and innocents, war and peace, art and society.
