Dear Annie,

What a time we've had!  We enjoyed a delicious Middle-Eastern experience at "Qom" with Donna Mulhearn ("Ordinary Courage"), an Italian brunch at "Blue Ginger" with Trish Clark ("Goodnight & God Bless") and High Tea at "Blue Angel" with crazy knitter Loani Prior ("Really Wild Tea Cosies").

Thanks to all of you who came along to these events - we hope that we can continue the momentum and bring lots more excitement!

Happy reading,
from Annie & Lyn
HAPPENINGS

BYRON BAY & UBUD WRITERS FESTIVALS

Kathy LetteDeb Perry and myself have been plotting and planning ways to take a group of booklovers to Byron Bay and Ubud later this year.  This week we decided that we are not travel professionals, and should stick with what we know!  We will not be organising these groups, but we will both attend Byron Bay,  and Deb will attend Ubud, and we will be happy to hang out with others from here.

We decided that Tjampuan Hotel in Ubud was a good location - walking distance to everything, and in the heart of town, so if you decide to go (and I encourage you to do so) you may like to look at the accommodation there.  Study the Festival website as well - www.ubudwritersfestival.com

With regard to Byron Bay, the Early Bird discounted passes are available, so why not book now and take advantage of the reduction..... www.byronbaywritersfestival.com.au   It looks like a terrific program. Kathy Lette will be there (pictured). We apologise for our change in plans and for any inconvenience caused, but feel it is the right decision.

THURSDAY MAY 27th - MARK THE DATE

Biggest Morning TeaWe are holding THE BIGGEST MORNING TEA out the front of the shop to raise money for the Cancer Council.  There will be tea, coffee, cakes, and lots of chances to win fantastic prizes.

We kick off at 10.30am.  This is a wonderful charity, and we will have fun whilst helping others.  Any baked donations will be gratefully received!  Phone us on 5448 2053 if you have any questions.

LOANI PRIOR AND HER WILD TEA COSIES

Tea CosiesLoani Prior and her mad obsession have done it again!  "Really Wild Tea Cosies" is sitting comfortably in the Top 10 Bestsellers in the Independent Bookshops! (but were we surprised??)

I was lucky enough to have a small display of Loani's own personal tea cosies in my window recently, and there were few moments where I didn't have a number of folk peering in the window, pointing and smiling.

I'm pleased to say that many of those folk ventured in the door and purchased a book or two.  If you are not familiar with this phenomenon, pop in and have a look at this wonderful book - it makes a terrific gift!  Congratulations Loani, you're a star!

POPULAR PENGUINS

Penguin BooksSomething that gets me very excited is a whole new range of Popular Penguins!  On 1st July there will be 75 new titles in the Popular Penguins range, bringing the total to 175.

"Reading habits have changed since 1935, but Penguin still believes in publishing the best books for everyone to enjoy, and that quality books published passionately and responsibly make the world a better place."

Couldn't have said it better myself!  It's a great list, and only $9.95 each.

BILL BRYSON AT HOME

At HomeJune brings a brand new release from Bill Bryson, titled "At Home".  Everyone loves Bill Bryson and this lavishly illustrated book will make an excellent gift or a treasure for the coffee table.  Here's the blurb.......

"It struck Bill Bryson one day that we devote a lot more time to the Wars of the Roses or the Normandy Landings than considering what most of history really consists of:  centuries and centuries of people quietly going about their daily business.... eating, sleeping, having sex, endeavouring to be amused.  So he started a journey around his house, an old rectory in Norfolk, wandering from room to room considering how the ordinary things in life came to be.  Along the way he allowed himself delightful digressions on the history of everything from architecture to epidemics, from food preservation to the discovery of electricity, and from crinolines to toilets.  And to his dismay, he discovered a terrifying variety of dangers to our health and happiness.

Where the prizewinning "A Short History of Nearly Everything" was a sweeping survey of Earth, the universe and everything, "At Home" is an inward look at all human life through a domestic telescope.  Because, as Bryson says, our homes aren't refuges from history, they are where history begins and ends."

BINDI IRWIN

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

Girl Who Played With FireMany of you will have seen the film of Stieg Larsson's first book of the Millennium Trilogy.  "The Girl Who Played With Fire" will come in September.
