Dear Annie,

ALMOST-SUMMER NEWS

I can't believe that the Christmas decorations are already appearing around the place!  There are wonderful books available again this year - more cookbooks than you can count, new titles from our favourite authors, fantastic kids' books, funny books, sad books and inspirational books.  Even Keith Richards has finally released the story of his long, successful and miraculous life.

Advice is our pleasure - please let us help you choose just the right thing for your friends and family.  Don't forget that we are happy to lay by for Christmas, and we now have some lovely Christmas wrapping paper and will wrap your gifts happily, free of charge.

As it's almost summer, and as I have a wonderful new neighbour who loves a party as much as I do, I have decided to schedule an author event on each Thursday through December.   Join us on the footpath outside our shop and SHANGHAI SALLY'S , and enjoy words of wisdom from very varied writers, and a glass of wine or a delicious coffee, all with our compliments.  Peregian Beach Village will be staying open for Thursday shopping on the 9th and 16th, so you can enjoy a leisurely browse in the cool and calm of evening.

A big, special THANK YOU to Palmira, who has been working in the shop whilst Lyn and I roamed around the globe over the past months. You haven't seen the last of her!   I'm so fortunate that my friends are also great booksellers!

(Read right through to the end to find out how to win a terrific prize from Murdoch Books.)

Happy reading,
from Annie & Lyn

Fact into Fiction!

Join us on Thursday 2nd December, and find out how the annual whale research project at Peregian Beach inspired a Queensland based crime series.

Pat lives in Brisbane but spends much of her time with sand between her toes at her beloved Peregian Beach,  where she does most of her writing, and which is the setting for her first book,  LOOSE ENDS, published in 2006.  She founded the very active Crime Writers Queensland and published seven anthologies of crime over fifteen years.

Pat has just released the fourth book in the series of ANNIE BRYCE MYSTERIES, titled DESTINATION TRIBULATION,  set in North Queensland.  The series is attracting a growing body of readers who enjoy the local settings, the characters and the twists and turns of the plots.

The plot of her first book LOOSE ENDS was hung on the long running whale research project which takes place every spring at Peregian Beach during the southern migration.  Pat will discuss her life in literature and her compulsion to explore Queensland's murky past;  "A strong sense of place is essential for crime fiction, so I decided to set my mystery novels in Queensland - it's high time we had our fair share of crooks and sleuths." says Pat.

AUTHOR TALK WITH WINE AND CHEESE - ON THE FOOTPATH

FREE OF CHARGE

(Bookings are not essential, but we appreciate your advice, should you decide to attend)

At the age of 21, Stephen fell 30 metres down a cliff. He suffered major head and spinal injuries, critical blood loss, five heart attacks and severe liver, kidney and abdominal organ damage. Whilst in a coma, his family was informed that should Stephen survive, he would be most likely to spend the remainder of his life being dependant on the welfare of others. Successful surgery fused his dislocated spine back to his hips, and a body cast from chest to knee was set, putting him on the long road to limited mobility.

Stephen lost approximately 40kg, his five senses were compromised, and the head and nerve trauma led to compounding difficulties in communication, movement and excessive pain. Upon the discharge from his fourth hospital, Stephen was confronted with the painful reality of living with injury, fear, financial insecurity and long term unemployment. To add to his dilemma, his head injury took away his capacity to read, write or speak and simply to process information. Constant failure, embarrassment and disappointment in his attempts to overcome these obstacles brought confusion, self doubt and anxiety.  His choice was clear - either be relentless in his pursuit of personal success, regardless of the many difficulties, or surrender and 'play the blame game'.  Stephen committed to a self imposed rehabilitation program that took 10 years to complete. Despite overwhelming medical, physical and social setbacks, he fully regained his cognitive and communication skills. He also rebuilt his physical strength, mobility and endurance.

Stephen started Smiling Tiger in 2002, and has since taught and trained individuals and businesses throughout Australia how to overcome their professional and personal obstacles, manage their environment and achieve their goals, regardless of how powerful the obstacles may be.  Stephen is a local of Peregian Beach these days, and his incredible story must be read or heard to be believed!  His book BOUNCING BACK WHEN YOU HIT ROCK BOTTOM  could be the perfect gift for someone needing encouragement and inspiration of any kind, or just to help with those impossible New Year's resolutions!

AUTHOR TALK WITH WINE & NIBBLES - ON THE FOOTPATH

FREE OF CHARGE

(Bookings are not essential, but we appreciate your advice, should you decide to attend)

Africa is one of the more exotic destinations on the planet (in my opinion!)  It's true that anyone setting foot on African soil is invaded by a bug which will never leave.  This bug feeds the desire to return to Africa again and again.  Both Sally and Bud have left a piece of their heart firmly embedded in Africa, and have been inspired and compelled to put their experiences to paper.

Sally has two bestselling memoirs, SILENT FOOTSTEPS and IVORY MOON and has a novel in progress, and Bud has recently released her first novel AFRICAN EULOGY and has some non-fiction safari stories in the pipeline for next year.

Join us and enjoy a discussion between these two friends and Africa-philes, as they explain their journey to publication, and "Why Africa?".

Distant HoursKATE MORTON

We were thrilled to welcome Kate Morton back to Noosa, for the launch of her new book, THE DISTANT HOURS.  I see Kate becoming one of Australia's most successful authors, if she isn't already.  Her books have very broad appeal.  They are beautifully written, compelling stories of families and their secrets.  For a special gift, we have some signed copies in stock.

ANN RICKARD STRIKES AGAIN!!

I have just finished Ann Rickard's latest book, THREE IN A BED IN THE MED.  This is Ann's 6th book, and her best by far.  It involves a mad trio swanning about in the Greek Islands, looking for suitable attractions for the next tour group, and failing miserably at doing anything much more than eating fantastic food (you can smell the calamari), drinking  fabulous wines (by the litre) and soaking up the sights, smells and sounds of the Mediterranean.  There's also a bit of action involving a large bed, climbing steps and not much nightwear!  We see a little more of the real Ann Rickard in this book, as she frankly discusses her feelings about this menage a trois.  It's a perfect gift for someone who loves travel and laughter.

MOVEMBER

Have you noticed that men have changed lately?  Many familiar faces have sprouted uncharacteristic facial hair all of a sudden!  I've never been a fan of facial hair myself, but am loving that these men are sacrificing their natural good looks to support the Movember cause, helping to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Beyond Blue.  If you can't grow your own mo' you can support the cause by attending a fundraising event on Sunday 28th November.  There are prizes to be won, delicious food, including breakfast courtesy of Cafe Saha and mo's on sticks from Sweet Tempered Chocolateria and much more.  A game of indoor ten pin is included in the ticket price.

There are only 80 tickets available, so contact NORBERT PETRAS on 0434 397 674 or runningnorbert@hotmail.com.

MOVEMBER FUNDRAISING EVENT
