NIGEL MARSH

Nigel MarshNigel is an Australian underwater photographer and photojournalist, whose work has been published in numerous magazines, newspapers and books in Australia and overseas.  Nigel purchased his first underwater camera at 15 years old once he had experienced the beauty of the underwater world.  He learned to SCUBA dive, studied photography and the marine life off his Sydney home, and began to share his images and experiences with others, presenting slide shows and writing articles for magazines.  In 1990 Nigel moved to Brisbane, and seized the opportunity to work with Neville Coleman, a guru of the diving industry.  He co-authored Dive Sites of the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea and Diving Australia with Coleman, and began work on a study of the threatened grey nurse shark with a view to future publication.

HMAS BrisbaneIn 2005 HMAS Brisbane was scuttled off Mooloolaba, and has since become the Coast's foremost underwater tourist attraction.  In six short years the ship has sprouted a coral garden, and is home to a myriad of underwater species, attracting thousands of divers each year from around Australia and overseas.  Nigel has produced a beautiful photographic exploration of HMAS Brisbane, which includes the history of the ship and its journey to the bottom of the sea.

Join us for a peek into another world.

COMPLETE GUIDE TO GAME FISHING - ALISTAIR McGLASHAN

The Complete Guide to Game Fishing

Once the domain of anglers with big, expensive game boats, game fishing today is possible even in a trailer-boat. As a result, more and more anglers are discovering the delights of offshore fishing and catching huge fish from small boats. Armed with The Complete Guide to Game Fishing, you will know how to find, identify, hook and ultimately catch (or release) the game fish in our waters, from the huge black marlin to small tuna .... and everything in between.

Author Alistair McGlashan spends more than 200 days a year on the water, and regularly contributes to dozens of magazines, locally and internationally, including a weekly fishing column for Sydney's Daily Telegraph. He is the author of four books including The Complete Fishing Bible.

Alistair will be "in conversation" with Julian Pepperell, who is one of Australia's best-known marine biologists and a recognised world authority on billfishes, tuna and sharks. Julian is the author of the best-selling Fishes of the Open Ocean (amongst others), a professor and a very good friend of ours.

Join us for some fishy conversation, light snacks and the opportunity to purchase this fantastic new book, which will be a perfect Christmas gift, particularly signed and dedicated by the author!

SHELLEY DAVIDOW & PAUL WILLIAMS

Shelley Davidow

Back to Africa!

SHELLEY DAVIDOW is originally from South Africa. She grew up in a bi-racial family at the height of Apartheid and has lived and worked in South Africa, Zimbabwe, England, Germany, Qatar, USA and now Australia. Since 2009 she has been an English teacher at the Noosa Pengari Steiner School. Shelley has been published widely in the areas of children's and YA fiction, and is the author of 36 books! Her memoir, Eye of the Moon, has been critically acclaimed. It is an emotionally intense and poetic piece of writing, touching on the subjects of love, forgiveness, identity and fixed perceptions, set against the backdrop of the changing political face of South Africa.

Paul WilliamsPAUL WILLIAMS was born in the UK, but grew up in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. He completed a PhD in English in the USA, and has lived and taught in the Middle East, Europe and the USA. His memoir, Soldier Blue was voted Book of the Year in 2008 in South Africa. He currently lectures in Creative Writing at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Soldier Blue is presently being considered for a Hollywood film interpretation. It is a brilliant, captivating and deeply moving coming-of-age memoir, set against the backdrop of the Rhodesian Bush War of the 1970s. Paul's writing sparkles with wit, irony and pathos as he explores the appalling truths of the battlefield, and the fragile world of romantic love.

FlagsWhat a treat! Two fantastic authors, speaking about two of the most troubled and the most beautiful countries on the planet. Don't miss this one!

BOOK CLUB

Cat's Table

Please note that there has been a change to our Book Club arrangements. From now on we will continue to meet on the third Tuesday of the month, but we will meet at Zachary's Restaurant & Bar in Peregian Beach. If the restaurant is busy, there is a back area which we can use. Come at 7.00pm if you wish to enjoy one of Zachary's famous pizzas, or at 7.30pm if you wish to join for the discussion only.

The book for the October discussion on Tuesday 18th October will be The Cat's Table by Michael Ondaatje, which is a new release. Again, if you wish to purchase a copy from me, please let me know, as this is a popular title at the moment.

For the November meeting we have decided that each of us should bring a book we have enjoyed, and give a short talk about the various aspects of the book, and why it has resounded with us. We have all agreed that December is too busy for anyone to commit to Book Club, so we will miss that meeting and meet again on Tuesday January 10th if it suits everyone.

NEWSLETTER QUESTION....

King James Bible

The first correct answer by email will win a bundle of three great new releases from Text Publishing. It was hard to find something that can't just be Googled! Shelley Davidow showed me this......

Take a copy of the King James Bible and go to Psalm 46. Now count 46 words into the text and note that word, then count 46 words backwards from the end of Psalm 46 and note that word. The two words together will name a supposed co-author of the King James Bible. Who is it?
